Vlog Brothers Statistical Analysis
The vlogs used to be less wordy, but since 2011, the word-count has stayed about the same
Using the awesome Nerdfighteria transcript page I plotted the length of the video year over year. I threw out videos that were longer than five minutes in an effort to only get the vlogs. It turns out that the amount of words has increased from less than 600 to almost 800, but the word-count stayed about the same since 2011.
Hank and John say the EXACT SAME NUMBER OF WORDS (to within less than a quarter of aword)!!
I got transcripts for 1,722 videos using the awesome Nerdfighteria transcript page. I aligned that with the annotation of the video thumbnails I did previously, and simply counted the words for each brother. It’s imperfect for several reasons (not every video is transcribed, I simply split the transcripts on whitespace, I didn’t check or remove anything in brackets…), but I was STUNNED to see that there is no (statistical) difference between the number of words Hank and John say in the video. On average, Hank says 758.8 words (sample size of 602), and John says 758.6 words (sample size of 608)!! I don’t know who I expected to say more words, since they both talk quite fast, but I CERTAINLY did not expect for them to be dead even, to within less than 0.25 words!! Incredible.
The Vlog Brothers got the most views in 2013
Plotting the views by year, it’s clear that 2013 had the most, while 2007 had the fewest. Finding the longest and shortest videos for each year:
John and Hank’s post are the same length
I was curious as to whether one brother talked longer than the other. To find out, I plotted the amount of time of each video that had John or Hank (or both or neither) in the thumbnail, making the simplifying (though not entirely accurate) assumption that the person in the thumbnail talked most of the time. I threw out one crazy “neither” outlier, and the result was that Hank and John talk a similar amount of time (statistically). Was I the only one somewhat surprised by this? I guess I don’t know what I expected…
The VlogBrothers are on track to have their best year in terms of Like/Dislike ratio!
I plotted the like/dislike for every video, binned by year, where the red line is the average like/dislike ratio. I find the trend really interesting. What happened in 2009, 2016, and 2017?? 2016 and 2017 are all the more interesting given that they dipped out of nowhere, and then recovered the following year. From this, it looks like 2021 might be there best year ever! It’s still early in the year, so it is entirely possible that the ratio will come down over time.
